Newcrest Mining Limited has established a global A$20 million Community Support Fund to provide financial assistance to its host communities to help them face the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Australia, a portion of the fund will be directed to the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne regions in New South Wales and the Telfer region in Western Australia.
A significant new symbol of the ever-growing and closer relationships between Newcrest Mining and the Martu people was celebrated at the company’s Telfer gold mine, with the official opening of the Kevin Fred Room.
Named after Martu elder Kevin Fred, it is the first of any building at Telfer named to honour an individual, and recognises the 16-year period in which Kevin worked tirelessly to strengthen relationships and trust between Newcrest and the Martu people.
Six Newcrest Mining Limited employees banded together to embark on an epic 2,246 km bike ride from their Perth office to the Telfer operations, raising awareness and funds for mental health.
Funds raised went to the WA Disabled Sports Association and Beyond Blue, helping to make a difference in the lives of those affected by anxiety, depression or suicide.
Newcrest Mining recently held its second Newcrest Crowd online challenge, Get 2 the Core, encouraging problem solvers to tackle a complex mining problem by providing a real business challenge, data sets and opportunities for ongoing partnerships.
Jonah Bennett has shown Newcrest colleagues he’s ready to accept his latest challenge, as Telfer’s first Martu apprentice. Jonah is from the Bidyadanga community, located on the Kimberley coast, and first began working for Newcrest at the Telfer site in late 2015.
