The Gold Industry Group (GIG)’s school program has expanded to inspire the next generation of gold industry leaders, by providing free, interactive gold demonstrations to primary and secondary students across Australia.
Developed in conjunction with Earth Science Western Australia (ESWA), the one-hour sessions are delivered by passionate gold industry professionals and incorporate STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning through a hands-on activity that replicates common-place scenarios within the gold sector.
Teachers of upper primary (Years 4-6) and lower secondary (Years 7-10) can book their free session via our online platform, currently available in metro and regional areas where GIG facilitators operate and live in Western Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria. Other States and Territories will be added to the platform in 2020.
ESWA Chief Executive Officer, Jo Watkins, said the program offers students a unique opportunity to interact with real gold industry professionals while learning something about the industry.
“The hands-on activities are a great opportunity to apply skills learnt in the classroom to a real world context,” Ms Watkins said.
“We are excited to support the Gold Industry Group in connecting educators and students with the industry, while providing a unique and valuable learning opportunity.”
The expansion of the GIG’s Gold Education Program to provide free demonstrations follows other educational resources already freely available to both primary and secondary schools, including HASS and science lesson plans linked to the Australian Curriculum; fact sheets; excursion options; and the free Heart of Gold Australia app which features the Perth and Kalgoorlie Heart of Gold Discovery Trails, gold games and other gold experiences around the country.
In addition, schools can now place orders for a free gold resources box, containing a variety of educational materials including sizable rock samples from gold mines across the country.
