The Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League (GIG WANL) were joined by partners and sponsors to officially launch their 2020 season at the Gold Netball Centre on Friday 26 June.
The competition continues to go from strength to strength, and this year GIG WANL welcomes Peel Lightning to its competition taking the total number of teams competing for the premiership to eight.
Round 1 begins Friday 3 July, and among the changes, clubs will no longer have bye weekends.
Despite COVID-19 threatening to derail the season, Netball WA, in close consultation with all eight clubs, has developed a strong competition for the Women’s Open, Men’s and Women’s U20s, which will run over 15 weeks, including two double-header weekends and three weeks of finals.
Netball WA CEO, Simon Taylor said it was important for the sport to proceed with a GIG WANL season this year and get the players and coaches back on court.
“All the clubs have been terrific during this uncertain time; I can’t wait to see Friday night matches played at the Gold Netball Centre again,” Mr Taylor said.
This season, Netball WA have partnered with Infinite Action to bring more GIG WANL games to fans, no matter where they are, with WANL TV streamed live to the Netball WA Facebook.
Infinite Action CEO Tom Tapping said it is exciting to present quality netball to the large community of followers.
“We will introduce many new broadcast innovations throughout the season and expand the number of games covered to virtually every League game of the season. We're looking forward to a great season ahead as sport restarts,” Mr Tapping continued.
Mr Taylor stated this partnership would help to promote the sport.
“No matter where you are in this State, or even the world, fans will be able to watch games live - we are literally bringing the games to you, on your TV or your device,” Mr Taylor concluded.
Netball WA encourages its patrons to follow physical distancing rules and hygiene practices in line with Phase 4 of the Government’s COVID-19 guidelines.
Gold Industry Group members supporting the netball partnership include Gold Fields, Northern Star Resources, Saracen Mineral Holdings, Newcrest Mining, St Barbara Limited, Newmont Goldcorp Australia, AngloGold Ashanti Australia, Gold Road Resources, Ramelius Resources and The Perth Mint.
