The Gold Industry Group backed 2021 NAIDOC Netball Carnival saw more than 2,500 netballers and their families take part, with teams traveling from across the State to proudly represent their communities on Sunday 7 November in the nation’s biggest Indigenous carnival.
110 teams competed at the Gold Netball Centre for an 18th year, growing from 10 teams in 2004. This year players travelled from far and wide including Albany, Bunbury, Katanning, Karratha, Narrogin, Perth, Tambellup, Laverton and Leonora competing across eight age divisions.
The annual event is both an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netballers to play competitive netball, as well as a platform to celebrate their peoples’ history, culture, and achievements.
Gold Industry Group Director Andrea Maxey presented the awards to the winners and MVP medallists and emphasised the importance of the event to the community.
“The NAIDOC Netball Carnival plays an important role in celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and provides a unique opportunity to engage with and empower Indigenous communities all over the State.
“It was fantastic to see such a great turnout, congratulations to all the participants. The Gold Industry Group is thrilled to support the event for a third year,” said Ms Maxey.
Netball WA General Manager – Community Netball Liz Booth said the Carnival was an opportunity to showcase and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netballers.
“This growing annual event is a terrific way to celebrate the skills, history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netballers, as well as provide a platform to increase physical participation, health awareness and education outcomes,” Ms Booth said.
Games were played with a special Belt Up NAIDOC ball featuring Aboriginal artwork by 2020 NAIDOC Netball Carnival participant Peyton Eades, whose winning design was selected from all the entries submitted by Carnival participants.
The GIG’s fun gold activations were popular with players and their families, who enjoyed getting snapped in the gold photobooth and competing to win a special #heartofgold merchandise pack in the inflatable ‘Shoot Gold 4 Netball’ game.
