The CoRE Learning Foundation (CoRE) has embarked on a first-of its-kind mentoring initiative with partner IGO Limited to connect young graduates with enthusiastic Norseman District High School CoRE secondary students.
Through the CoRE + IGO Graduates Hands-On Learning Program Initiative, IGO Limited’s graduates will have the opportunity to share their expertise and assist the students in developing fundamental skills, aimed at improving literacy, numeracy, and digital competencies. They will also demonstrate how such fundamentals are used daily in their everyday working life, giving the students an insight into real-world learning that is applicable to future job and career opportunities.
IGO Head of Corporate Affairs Joanne McDonald shared her excitement as the founding partner of the initiative.
“This is a unique opportunity for our graduates to connect with young people and further build and develop their skills, while giving the students a fantastic experience to learn about the real world.
“We are looking forward to seeing the impact this initiative will make on the next generation of STEAM leaders,” Ms McDonald said.
Over the course of the year, students will build on this connection as they regularly interact with IGO graduates culminating with a visit to IGO’s Nova mine site at the end of the year, where they will see how their CoRE projects are reflected in real-world processes at a mine site.
CoRE Founder and Lead Suzy Urbaniak is passionate about bringing the industry into the classroom through their project-based learning model.
“In CoRE, we support today's youth for tomorrow's world through integrated 21st-century learning and we achieve this for our CoRE students through #therealclassroom and this initiative.
“It aims at being an exemplar learning protocol, a connection between industry and education to represent a potentially clear pathway for our students to pursue,” Ms Urbaniak said.
Through CoRE, Ms Urbaniak continues to bring the real classroom to students, staff and parents through industry collaborations, programs and initiatives like these to emphasise the importance of true real-life learning and providing the tools kids will find useful after completing high school.
