We recently spoke with AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s Lead: HR Business Partnering Jaymie Clark about her passion for her role and what excites her about working in Australia’s dynamic gold industry.

How did you get into gold?

I started working in Mining when I was 18 years old, for a Maintenance Services company, then I studied HR and was eager to get back into Mining. When I commenced in a FIFO HR role about 6 years ago, something drew me to gold particularly! I think it was the excitement of gold itself over other types of mining, and how the Industry comes together as one.

I remember seeing my first gold pour and thought this is so cool, even though I don’t work directly with the gold, I have only worked for gold mining companies since returning to the industry.

Tell us about what your role and why it's important for the company?

I have just commenced as the Lead: HR Business Partnering, leading a team of HR Business Partners across the region. Our role is to build trusting relationships with our employees and people leaders to guide and coach them on best practice.

It is important they feel comfortable coming to us for advice, and we can assist in all aspects of the employee lifecycle.

What is it about the gold industry that excites you?

The gold industry is so unique, no matter what company you work for you feel connected in some way. I am very fortunate that I get to be involved with the Gold Industry Group and partake in the Netball tournament, and other great opportunities like the Gold Jobs video and this article which can encourage people to get into the gold industry.

I would definitely describe the gold industry as a community. AngloGold Ashanti is really passionate about PRIDE and Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in our organisation with dedicated committees that allow all employees to be part of our journey. I am really lucky to be part of an organisation that is learning and supporting these areas to build a better working life for everyone that is part of it.

What is your favorite part of your role?

I enjoy engaging with and upskilling our leaders on people management processes to get the best outcome possible. My role also allows me to develop and drive strategic operational projects and initiatives to support and promote a positive workplace culture.

What is your biggest achievement and why?

So far that would be getting promoted into my new role. I was previously the Senior HR Business Partner at Tropicana and have taken on a new role working closely with the HR Manager as the Lead HR Business Partner.

What would you say to someone considering entering the industry?

Mining definitely has its perks and there are many great opportunities on offer. In my case working in Mining and in HR has opened the door for me to experience working remotely, working with and supporting the local communities, an even time roster, meeting great people and continuously expanding my skills.

What do you do with your spare time?

I mostly enjoy catching up with friends or exploring the outdoors. I like to travel to new places I haven’t been before.
