The Gold Industry Group was behind more than 3,300 netballers that travelled from across Western Australia to compete at the 2021 Fuel to Go and Play Association Championships at the Gold Netball Centre in June.
Teams represented Associations from as far as Kununurra, Karratha, Albany, Esperance, Kalgoorlie and many regional communities in between.
More than 3,300 players and 280 umpires from 39 WA Associations participated this year in 36 divisions, from 12U through to Masters, playing more than 850 matches across 39 courts over three days.
The Fremantle Netball Association and Wanneroo Netball Association were the standouts in Division 1 of each age group, with Fremantle winning the Open, 17U and 15U Grand Finals, and Wanneroo winning the 14U, 13U and 12U Grand Finals. Bunbury took out the Masters Division, while other Division winners from regional WA included Bridgetown, Bunbury, Busselton, Eaton, Esperance, Geraldton, Katanning and Leschenault. Gold Industry Group Chairperson Kelly Carter presented awards to the winners.
Gold Industry Group Executive Officer Rebecca Johnston emphasised the importance of the event to the community.
“The Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships is a highlight on the netball calendar, offering a wonderful opportunity for players and officials from across the State to come together on the court.
“It was fantastic to see such a great turn out, congratulations to all the participants. The Gold Industry Group is thrilled to support the event,” said Ms Johnston.
As the Principal Partner of Netball WA, the GIG provided each participating team with a bespoke #heartofgold medallion for their Most Valuable Player for the second time.
Our Gold Lounge was bustling with families who had their faces and braids painted gold and got snapped with their favourite West Coast Fever players in an augmented reality photobooth, with the popular #heartofgold merchandise pack a winner after playing the inflatable ‘Shoot Gold 4 Netball’ competition.
The players also had the opportunity to get up close with West Coast Fever players on the last day at the Gold Industry Group’s Gold Lounge.
Netball WA General Manager – Community Netball, Liz Booth, thanked everyone involved in making the 2021 Fuel to Go and Play Association Championships such a great event.
“A huge thanks to everyone involved with this year’s event and the enormous effort that was put into making the weekend such an amazing success,” Ms Booth said.
“With 276 teams participating, some competitive and thrilling netball, an engaging activation zone that included a visit from our West Coast Fever team on Monday, up to 8,000 people coming through the gates daily and the unforgettable marriage proposal at the end of the second presentation ceremony, we had it all happening!”
“We’ve had some terrific feedback from participants and many of them are already looking forward to next year’s event,” added Ms Booth.
