The Gold Industry Group Western Australian Netball League (GIG WANL) 2019 season came to a close on Friday 20 September at the Gold Netball Centre, where the crowd enjoyed three fantastic games in a thrilling premiership conclusion.

It was a big night as the three division deciders, 20U, Open and Men, were played out in an intense rivalry between the West Coast Warriors and the Western Roar.

The night started with the 20U Division, where the Western Roar finished their season on a high after winning the battle against the West Coast Warriors by five points, in a 50 – 45 final score. Western Roar 20U’s Captain Sophia Lamers, was awarded their Most Valuable Player for her outstanding performance in this final.

In the Open Division, the Warriors continued to produce a polished performance, claiming the premiership title over Western Roar. The Warriors led from start to finish as they ran out a 74 – 65 victory. West Coast Warriors powerhouse shooter Donell Wallam was crowned their Most Valuable Player, after dominating the goal circle with 67 goals from 77 attempts.

The grand final night finished with a thrilling last-minute win, that saw West Coast Warriors Men’s win by one point against the Western Roar, in a final 47 – 46 score. Capping off a strong season, the Warriors finished top of the ladder after winning 10 of their 12 games, losing one and drawing the other.

Western Roar’s Mitch Cook was crowned the Most Valuable Player of the Men’s division, in an unusual moment where the MVP of the match was presented to a player of the runner-up team, reflecting the outstanding quality of the final match.

Following the final matches, all winners, officials and umpires received commemorative gold medallions for their achievements and contributions, courtesy of The Perth Mint.

Gold Industry Group Executive Officer Rebecca Johnston said the GIG are proud to be the naming rights partner of the GIG WANL and ensure the growth and sustainability of the League over the next three years.

“Congratulations to all the players in what was a thrilling finals night of netball,” Ms Johnston said.

“It was fantastic to see seven new clubs join the Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League this season and we look forward to seeing the League continue to grow through our long-term partnership in 2020.”

The 2019 GIG WANL season will be officially celebrated at the Jill McIntosh Medal awards night, to be held at the Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough on 19 October.
