Third time lucky for the AngloGold Ashanti Australia Lions, who claimed their first championship title defeating the Gold Fields Agnew Turbines at the 2021 Gold Industry Group Corporate Netball Day.
It was an even start as both the Lions and the Turbines battled it out for gold in from of cheering industry colleagues, but the Lions lifted the bar in the second term securing them a seven-goal victory, 14 - 7.
The Lions’ captain and the Most Valuable Player Holly Keenan was delighted to take out the most prestigious honour in this year’s Challenge.
“Netball has been my passion for decades, so to play in front of Fever/Australian netballers and have the grand finals commentated by Sue Gaudion, it is up there with my favourite netball memories,” said Ms Keenan.
“I look forward to the GIG corporate netball challenge every year. It’s fantastic to not only connect with other companies but also form stronger relationships with my colleagues from all areas of our business,” she concluded.
Hosted by Netball WA at the world-class Gold Netball Centre, 150 member employees from 14 teams joined the competition to celebrate the gold industry’s long-term partnership with Netball WA, West Coast Fever and Shooting Stars. The annual team-building experience pits members and friends against each other to crown the best gold industry corporate netball team in the State.
Now in its third year, the Challenge welcomed new teams from Westgold Resources Limited and Gold Road Resources joining for the first time and returning teams from Northern Star Resources Limited, Gold Fields, AngloGold Ashanti Australia, St Barbara Limited, Ramelius Resources, Netball WA and Shooting Stars.
Gold Industry Group Chairperson Kelly Carter said it was another successful day and the event continues to be a fantastic opportunity to connect with people in the industry along with our netball community.
“The Corporate Netball Challenge was another fantastic celebration of our partnership. Now in our third year, I am delighted to see more members participating, showing our strong connection with the netball community,” said Ms Carter.
“I’m very proud of the Gold Industry Group’s long-term partnership with Netball WA, West Coast Fever and Shooting Stars and look forward to seeing its impact continue to grow,” she concluded.
The Challenge also featured the annual Parliamentary Friends of Netball Exhibition Match where industry representatives Gold Fields VP of Legal and Compliance Kelly Carter and Gold Road Resources Managing Director Duncan Gibbs put their netball skills and competitive spirit on show.
The event then concluded with a sundowner to celebrate the day and reflect on our third year in partnership. Congratulations to Gold Road Resources’ Golden Malleefowls for taking out the best-dressed team!
Joining the Challenge for the first time, West Coast Fever Head Coach Dan Ryan said the event was a great opportunity to engage with Fever’s Principal Partner, the Gold Industry Group.
“Since arriving at the club as Head Coach, I’ve been so impressed by the genuine connection we have with our key partners and the mutual benefits that are being delivered,” said Mr Ryan.
“The opportunity to participate in the Gold Industry Group Corporate Netball Day was a lot of fun and I saw quite a few talented players out there. Congratulations to the AngloGold Ashanti Australia Lions on their win, I think the Netball WA team will need a few more training sessions before next year,” added Mr Ryan.
Our finalists the AngloGold Ashanti Australia Lions and Gold Fields Agnew Turbines have now earnt their spots in the West Coast Fever Corporate Netball Challenge to be held on Friday 4 February 2022 at the Gold Netball Centre. The tournament will see Fever’s exclusive corporate community go head-to-head for the title of Perth’s best corporate netball team.
