The people protecting Australia’s gold

Australia’s gold industry is one of the most secure in the world. Every day, gold moves from mine sites across the country through processing plants, refineries and, ultimately, to markets around the world. Each stage of that journey depends on strict systems of security, oversight and accountability. In Western Australia, that work is supported by one of the state’s oldest and most specialised policing functions: the Gold Stealing Detection Unit.

Based in Kalgoorlie, the unit investigates criminal activity and allegations across all stages of the gold production process. Its work stretches from prevention and education through to investigation and prosecution, helping protect an industry that remains central to Western Australia’s economy and identity.

A specialist unit with deep roots

The Gold Stealing Detection Unit has a history that reaches back more than a century.

The squad was formed in 1907, at a time when gold theft was a serious concern across the Eastern Goldfields. Following a report by Detective Sergeant Kavanagh, who was then in charge of Kalgoorlie police, a Royal Commission found the concerns justified and a special police service was established later that year.

The creation of the unit reflected the reality rhat gold theft required specialist knowledge. Investigating offences involving gold meant understanding how the industry operated, how gold moved through the production process and where vulnerabilities could emerge.

That remains true today. More than 100 years later, the unit continues to play a distinctive role in Western Australia’s policing landscape.

More than investigation

While detection and prosecution of gold theft has remained central to the unit’s role, its work extends well beyond responding to incidents.

The Gold Stealing Detection Unit provides clearance certificates for prospective mine workers, conducts inspections, offers advice and delivers education to industry. In many isolated mining regions, it also provides the only regular police service available to mine sites.

This combination of enforcement, prevention and industry engagement makes the unit unusual. It is not simply a team called in after something has gone wrong. It is part of the broader security framework that helps the gold industry operate with confidence.

Protecting gold is a shared responsibility

Security in the gold industry does not rest with one organisation. It depends on collaboration between mining companies, refiners, transport providers, security professionals and law enforcement.

For the Gold Stealing Detection Unit, that relationship with industry has been central since its earliest days. The Chamber of Mines supported investigatory services even before the squad was formally established, and the connection between industry and specialist policing has remained an important part of the unit’s work.

Today, the need for collaboration is just as strong. Western Australia produces the majority of Australia’s gold, making security essential not only for individual businesses, but for the reputation of the industry as a whole.

Every clearance, inspection, investigation and piece of advice helps ensure gold can move through the supply chain securely and responsibly.

The value of trust

Gold is one of Australia’s most valuable resources, but its value depends on more than what is extracted from the ground. A lot depends on the confidence that gold is produced responsibly, handled securely and moved through legitimate channels.

The Gold Stealing Detection Unit plays a small but important role in maintaining that confidence.

From its base in Kalgoorlie, the unit connects more than a century of policing history with the modern demands of one of Australia’s most significant industries. Its work reflects the ongoing partnership between law enforcement and the gold sector, and the shared responsibility of protecting every ounce.
